Every year, my dad and I go on a fishing trip. It's been our thing since I was twelve years old. We pick a lake somewhere in the mountains, rent a cabin that smells faintly of pine and mildew, and spend three days not catching fish. That's the joke. We never actually catch anything worth keeping, but we sit in a boat for hours, drinking mediocre coffee, talking about nothing and everything. It's the only time all year that we're truly alone together, no phones, no distractions, just the water and the sky and the occasional tug on the line.

Last year, the trip almost didn't happen. My dad had been having health issues, nothing too serious but enough that his doctor advised against long drives and remote locations. He called me on a Tuesday night, his voice heavy with disappointment, and told me he couldn't make it. I said all the right things, told him not to worry, that we'd do it next year, that his health was more important. But after I hung up, I sat in my apartment and felt something I hadn't felt in years. Loneliness. The deep, specific kind that comes from losing a tradition.

I'd taken the week off work anyway, so I had five days stretching out in front of me with nothing to do. No fishing trip, no plans, just empty time. The first day, I leaned into it. I slept late, watched bad movies, ordered pizza. It was fine. The second day, the restlessness set in. I cleaned my apartment, which I hate doing. I went for a long walk, which was nice but didn't fill the void. By the third day, I was desperate.

That's when I remembered a conversation I'd had with my cousin, Sarah, at a family barbecue the previous summer. Sarah is younger than me, still in college, and she'd been talking about how she made extra money playing online poker. She wasn't a professional or anything, just someone who'd figured out the micro-stakes tables and had a knack for it. She'd mentioned a site she used, said it was reliable and had good reviews. She said you just had to go to the Vavada official website and you were set.

I'd never been much of a gambler. A few trips to Vegas over the years, some blackjack, some slots, but nothing serious. The idea of playing online felt different, more intimate somehow. But I was bored, and bored people do strange things. I found the site, the one Sarah had mentioned, and I was impressed immediately. It was sleek and professional, with a game library that seemed endless. I signed up, deposited fifty bucks, and started exploring.

I avoided poker at first. That felt like it required actual skill, and I wasn't in the mood to think that hard. Instead, I found a slot game based on fishing. Of course. It had cartoon fish and a little boat and a soundtrack that sounded like someone humming. I played it for an hour, just spinning, winning a little, losing a little, and something unexpected happened. I felt calm. The restlessness, the loneliness, the disappointment about the trip, all of it faded into the background. I was just there, in that moment, watching the fish.

The next day, I tried a different game. This one was based on a treasure hunt, with maps and compasses and old chests. The graphics were stunning, the kind of detail you'd expect from a video game. I played for a few hours, lost about twenty bucks, but didn't care. It was the escape I needed, the thing that filled the empty hours.

On the fifth day, my last day off, I decided to try poker. I'd watched a few tutorials online, read some strategy guides, felt like I understood the basics. I found a micro-stakes table, bought in for ten bucks, and sat down. The first few hands were a disaster. I folded too much, then called too much, lost half my stack in twenty minutes. But I was learning. I could feel it. The patterns, the tells, the way the other players bet. It was like a puzzle, and I was slowly figuring out the pieces.

I played for three hours that day. Three hours of focus, of concentration, of being completely present. By the end, I'd turned my remaining five bucks into thirty-seven. It wasn't a fortune, but it felt like a victory. It felt like I'd accomplished something.

That night, I called my dad. I told him about the week, about the fishing game and the treasure hunt and the poker table. He listened, asked questions, laughed at the right parts. When I finished, he was quiet for a moment. Then he said, «Sounds like you had your own kind of fishing trip.»

He was right. It wasn't the same, not even close. But it was something. It was a way of being alone without feeling lonely, of filling the time without wasting it. And in its own strange way, it connected me to him. Because every time I played that fishing game, I thought of the lake, the boat, the mediocre coffee. I thought of him.

Now, I still play sometimes. Not as much as that week, but when I need an escape, when I need to clear my head, I pull out my laptop. I go to the Vavada official website, the one Sarah showed me, and I find a game that fits my mood. Sometimes it's the fishing one, for old times' sake. Sometimes it's poker, when I want to think. Sometimes it's something completely new, just for the adventure.

And every time I do, I think of that week. The week the fishing trip didn't happen, but something else did. Something unexpected, something I never would have found if things had gone according to plan. Life is like that, I guess. You think you know how it's going to go, and then it throws you a curveball. The trick is to swing anyway. You might just connect.
